How to Safeguard Your Health When You’re on the Road for Business

Business travel can take a toll on the health of frequent travellers. Don’t cancel all your business trips just yet – even if your business requires you to spend a lot of time on the road, there are things you can do to stay healthy.

Pay Attention to Hygiene When You Fly

When you travel by plane, you’re stuck in an enclosed space with many people for hours at a time. When someone coughs or sneezes, germs pass from one person to another. You can stay healthy by washing your hands often. The tray table at your seat is the dirtiest place on an airplane. Bring a pack of disinfecting wipes and wipe every surface of your tray table as soon as you settle in your seat.

Eat Healthy

People often neglect their diet when they travel. They eat the wrong things at the wrong times, and sometimes they indulge themselves a bit too much. From business dinners to room service, they make poor food choices that instantly derail their healthy lifestyle. Just because you’re on the road doesn’t mean that you have to eat poorly. For example, when you’re at the airport waiting for your flight, buy fruit or unsalted nuts instead of potato chips from food vendors. Better yet, pack your own healthy munchies for your trip. Most restaurants offer at least one or two healthier options. For example, choose lean meats, such as turkey instead of steak, and ask your server if you can substitute the fries that come with your meal with salad or fruit.

Stay Hydrated

Sometimes people forget to drink water when they’re on the road. Bring a water bottle with you to remind yourself to drink more water. You may be offered alcoholic beverages at dinners and functions; keep them to a minimum, because alcohol can dehydrate you.

Don’t Miss Your Workout

Being on the road doesn’t mean you have to miss your workout. Pack your workout gear in your bag if your business trip lasts for more than a couple of days. Fit in a workout session at the hotel gym before breakfast or after dinner to keep yourself active. Even if there’s no gym at your hotel, you can jog outside or do some stretching in your room.

Follow Your Regular Routine

Even though you’re away from home, it’s best to stick to your regular routine. For example, if you always write in your journal before bed, bring your journal with you and write in it before you go to bed each night.

Sleep Well

Some people don’t sleep well on beds other than their own; this is perfectly normal, particularly on your first night away. Do something relaxing before bed to calm your nerves. For example, you can read a non-work-related book or take a hot bath. You don’t have to let business travel ruin your health. By taking the right steps, you can stay healthy – even when you travel often.
