Some parents have a hard time working full-time jobs outside the home when they have young kids. Fortunately, you can choose to stay at home with your kids and still make a good living to support your family. In most cases, you just need a computer, a few inexpensive tools of the trade, and a little free time during the day or evening to launch a successful home-based business.

Web Development

As an independent web developer, you’ll create and maintain websites and apps for clients. You can find clients in person or online, so your clients may be in Canada or anywhere else in the world. To start a business as a web developer, you need coding skills, so you’re at an advantage if you already know a few coding languages such as HTML or JavaScript. If you don’t know how to code, you can enroll in an online coding bootcamp, or try your hand at some of the many free coding course materials available online. This business works great for parents with kids of all ages as you can run your business entirely from home.

Arts and Crafts

If you already make crafts as a hobby, you might consider selling your unique handmade products. Whether you make jewelry, knit, sew, or do woodworking, you can earn an income making and selling crafts even if your kids haven’t started school yet. You can open selling accounts on crafting marketplace websites such as iCraftGifts.com, Made Urban, or Runway Crush, which you might consider if you design clothing as a hobby. E-commerce marketplaces such as Etsy and eBay provide great outlets to sell your crafts internationally. Local retailers also like to buy from local vendors, so you might consider making a colorful brochure and meeting with local store managers to show them your crafts when you have some free time away from the kids.

Wedding Planner

As a home-based wedding planner, you’ll need to spend your time in your home office prospecting for clients and getting to know all the wedding vendors in your area. You’ll need to be very organized and punctual to run a successful wedding planning business. You can start your business slowly and work with just people you know personally when your kids are younger, and then scale as they grow up and become more independent.

Freelance Writer

Like web development, freelance writing is a business you can do entirely at home. Writing website content, social media content, blog posts, and newspaper and magazine articles may work for you if you love writing. The good news is you don’t need professional journalism training to succeed as a freelance writer, but you do need to have a fairly good grasp of grammar. In the digital age, content is king, and it’s fairly easy to find lots of businesses looking to hire freelance writers. To make a good part- or full-time income, you’ll need to be selective and take writing assignments from clients offering the highest pay. You don’t have to leave your kids in daycare or with a baby sitter. Start a home-based business and be there to watch your kids grow up.
