How Canada’s Express Entry Immigration Program Simplifies Hiring Foreign Workers

Due to a lack of skilled labour in many parts of Canada, the government has implemented an Express Entry immigration system. In the past, it often took 12 to 14 months for foreign workers to immigrate, and employers had to bear many of the expenses on their own. Now, immigration for skilled workers takes six months or less for most applicants. If you’re a small business owner thinking about hiring a foreign employee, you’ll be happy to know the process is much simpler to navigate.

Express Entry Pool

Foreign workers interested in coming to Canada can join the Express Entry pool. To create a profile, a worker provides a resume, education history, language skills, and related information. This pool is an incredible new resource for Canadian employers – if you’re trying to fill a position in your business, search through the Express Entry pool. The list of eligible workers for Express Entry includes white-collar professionals, labourers, craftsmen, health care professionals, and some service-industry workers.

Finding Employees

To search through the Express Entry pool, consider using the government’s Job Bank service. You create a job listing, and the service matches you to potential candidates. If you offer a job to one of these candidates, that candidate receives an invitation to complete the immigration process and has 60 days to apply for permanent residence through the program.

Express Entry is divided into three main programs: the Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. The program your employee should use depends on the type of job you are offering. As you go through the process, Citizenship and Immigration Canada provides you and your new employee with some direction.

Alternative Recruitment Methods

The Express Entry pool can save you time and money on recruitment efforts, but you aren’t just restricted to this pool of applicants – you can continue with traditional recruitment activities. You can network with international colleagues for recommendations, look at resumes on sites such as Indeed or LinkedIn, or find applicants through other arenas. If you find a qualified worker, have them join the Express Entry pool and note the job offer on their profile. At that point, the Canadian government issues an invitation to apply for permanent residence.

The Provincial Nominee Program

In some cases, members of the Express Entry pool can be invited to apply for residency without a job offer. Provincial governments nominate these candidates to receive invitations to apply for residency, and they are chosen based on their skills, experience, and related factors. If you can’t find a foreign worker through the Job Bank or a private-sector job board, you may be able to hire a worker who has entered the country through the Provincial nominee program. These workers have open visas, so any employer can hire them.
