How to Determine Employment Eligibility in Canada

When you hire employees, you need to make sure they are eligible to work in Canada. This involves checking their Social Insurance Number and a few other steps.

  1. Ask for an SIN card, a letter confirming the SIN number, or a related document.
  2. Compare the name on the SIN to the name on a photo ID.
  3. If the SIN begins with “9,” ask the employee for a valid work permit.
  4. If hirees have valid work permits but no SINs, direct them to Service Canada to get SINs.

While recruiting employees, you may ask if they are authorized to work in Canada, but you may not ask if they are a citizen, permanent resident, or work-permit holder.
