When you invent something – whether it’s a product or a technology – you can protect your invention by applying for a patent with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. To register for a patent, take the following steps:
Perform a search on CIPO’s Canadian Patent Database to see if someone else has already registered a patent for the product or technology. You can’t register it again if it’s already in the database.
If you don’t have a My Industry Canada account, create one on the CIPO website.
Complete the online application form and attach all the relevant documents, including abstract and drawings pertaining to your invention.
Submit the application and payment online.
Alternatively, you can hire a registered patent agent to file the patent with CIPO on your behalf.
