Home-Based Business

A home-based business is a business, regardless of its size, that operates from the owner’s home. Many successful businesses start as home businesses. For example, Steve Jobs started Apple Computer in his parents’ garage.

Depending on your business, you may need to check with your city officials to see if there are any zoning ordinances in your neighbourhood. For example, if many customers visit your home office, your neighbours may not appreciate the increased vehicular traffic or number of parked cars on your street.

To improve the professional image of your home business, you can install a phone line dedicated for business use. You can also direct your business mail to a postal box rather than your home address. If you have small children, you may need to arrange for day care during your office hours so you can focus on your work.
