Tell us about your business.
Dolled Up Cupcake is a family run bakery that opened its doors in February 2013. Located in Mississauga’s Meadowvale Town Centre. Our facility is a peanut and tree nut free bakery, which offers gluten, dairy and egg free baked goods upon request for those with dietary needs. We cater to cupcakes, custom cakes, pushpops and cakepops for any occasion. Our philosophy is “To beautifully craft freshly baked goods with the finest ingredients to be devoured”!

How long have you been using QuickBooks?
We’ve been using QuickBooks when we had an idea of wanting to open a store. We needed a software to help us put our vision on paper and see if the numbers worked. We were recommended QuickBooks by our accountant. Without that vision, we would not have been confidant enough for both of us to leave our careers and head down this path.

What are the main tasks that QuickBooks helps you perform?
We use QuickBooks for all our day-to-day financial needs as well as documents for bank, government or any other entities that may require our financials. The main focus being our expenses, sales and HST.

How has QuickBooks helped you start, run or grow your business?
It’s definitely helped us give a clear picture of our strengths and weakness. Seeing an overview on a daily basis of our costs helps us identify areas that we need to improve or grow.

What was your “Ah Ha” moment that made you decided to start your business.
We started out baking desserts for family and friend’s events while having full time corporate careers. Once the calls started coming in from friends of friends that tried our cupcakes and wanted us to cater their event we thought it would be something we could do as a full time business. Upon sitting down and crunching numbers using we were able to confidently proceed down the route of having a storefront with overhead costs.

What was your first “big win” moment as a business owner?
That moment when you said “hey I can do this!” Opening Day & week. Michael and I were very fortunate and lucky in a sense that from the first day of our business, the community has fully embraced our products & store and have supported us by spreading the word amongst friends and family.

What is the best advice you could give to someone just starting out?
Take the time to ensure the business model and plan is done as accurately as possible. No one should start a business without understanding the “worst possible outcome”. A solid foundation from the start is critical to ensure that the business thrives once the doors open to the public.

What was your proudest moment as a business owner and why?
The calls we get from happy clients. The couples who we’ve catered their wedding and now are coming back for their baby showers, birthday cakes etc. Most of our clients have become repeat clients (daily, weekly or monthly). Questions about availability of franchises that we often get are also flattering. Not sure if we’re ready for that, but we’re looking forward to the next steps with our business.
