Intuit Small Business Spotlight: Woodhouse Brewing Co.

“Two and a half years ago, craft brewers were making some really great stuff, but they weren’t really doing an easy drinking lager,” recalls Graham Woodhouse. “I’m a beer guy and I love hops and big IPAs, but I saw an opportunity to create an approachable, gateway beer.” With that, he founded and launched Woodhouse Brewing Co.

Today, more than 150 independent establishments and a growing number of LCBOs in and around Toronto stock the lager that bears Graham’s name. As his business expands, he still does his best to keep things simple – from taste and branding to accounting.

A Certified Management Accountant, Graham recognizes the role his finances play in his success. He’s also quick to point out how important convenience is. “I chose QuickBooks Online because flexibility is key for me,” he says. “I’m always out talking to customers, doing deliveries, and supervising production and brewing. QuickBooks saves me time.”

Creating invoices, uploading bank statements, and collecting payment through integration with the Square app, Graham stays mobile with QuickBooks. “Because it’s cloud-based, my accountant can log in remotely and make updates in real time,” he explains. “He can file HST, do the month-end closing, whatever I need. It keeps us on track.”

Staying on track matters more than ever as Woodhouse Brewing continues to expand its scope. “The brand is a reflection of me and I believe in simplicity,” notes Graham. “As a sole proprietor, it’s important for me to spend as much time in the marketplace with my customers as possible. QuickBooks allows me to control my finances while doing just that – it’s that simple.”
