So you’ve got a great idea for a product or service, and you’re sure people in your target market will love it. Not so fast, says Small Business BC. Test your product on a small scale to find out what you have right and what you have wrong before investing in production and marketing.Large corporations have lots of money to spend on focus group testing and giveaways as part of the product testing phase, but your small business doesn’t need much money to test products. For example, if you own a retail store, you can demo a new product to customers and ask them to fill out a comment card with their feedback. You can also formally invite your preferred customers to participate in a focus group to test a product and let you know what they think about it. You might take to social media to test visual things such as product colors, product packaging, and advertising images. When testing products or services that require significant investment to bring them to market, you want to avoid asking people who are close to you, such as your best friend or your parents, for feedback. People who don’t know you well are your best bet when it comes to getting honest information or negative feedback about a product you’re testing.Testing products is the best way to avoid investing in unsatisfactory products or services, and getting feedback helps you create products and services your customers or clients actually want to buy.
