What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

As far as search engine rankings go, it’s better for a webpage to get a higher ranking in search engine results. Search engine optimization refers to the activities used to boost search engine rankings of a website’s content. SEO should not be confused with search engine marketing, which is the practice of using paid advertising to increase a website’s visibility in search results.

Keywords play an important role in SEO. Keywords are words or short phrases representing the information web users search for on a particular topic. For example, if you sell barbecue equipment, keywords in your content might be “gas grill reviews” or “winter grilling tips.” Your website content needs to incorporate a few well-considered keywords to rank in search engine results.

You might want to pay for some SEO-related activities; for example, you might pay a service to get keyword ideas for your content. Link building is also an SEO strategy that can boost search engine rankings. You build links by publishing high-quality content that authority websites want to include in their articles. If you run a solar business and publish an article about easy solar upgrades for the home, for example, you’d get a search engine boost if a link to your article appears on an authority website such as HuffingtonPost.com or CanadianBusiness.com.

As a small business owner, you can use SEO to gain online exposure for your company and find new clients and customers for your business.
